I was going to Toast a copy and then print the CD label with my CD/DVD label printer and mail a copy. I wanted to be certain that what I was trekking off to the post office to mail was indeed what he wanted. My wife changed that. She finished an amended tax return (netting us a WHOPPING $130 from a nearly $3K return on a salary overpayment last year). So, I decided to run the amended return off to the PO and that CD went with me. Since I don't trust the gov't in _any_ capacity, I figured I'd get this into the post before they changed the tax law and annihilate this huge $130 windfall. -- VAXman- A Bored Certified VMS Kernel Mode Hacker VAXman(at)TMESIS(dot)COM "Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn't it?" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2007 15:18:39 -0400 From: norm.raphael@metso.com Subject: GetQuI help pls Message-ID: I want for a supplied queue_name to show the FORM_MOUNTED, and all PENDING_JOBS same like the SHOW QUEUE queue_name BRIEF but with the "FORM=form_name" FORM displayed for each pending job with a stock mismatch. Going from Netscape to Mozilla, I was susprised to see that one couldn't even disable style sheets from the preference menu. But I was pointed to a "plug in" that adds buttons to the menu bar (and configuration in the preferences). I have java and javascript buttons on the menu bar that I can turn on and off at will. This is extremely useful. It would be nicer to have javascript turned off by efault and only enabled for bookmarks that have been marked as javascript friendly. I have also (from a different plug in) the ability to disable style sheets. For instance, news.com.com uses style sheets to make a neat layout that emaulates a printed newspapers with articles in random order (some portion are left to right, others are top to down, some "inserts" etc. By disably style sheets, it maes the main page far more usage with everything in sequential order from top to bottom. "Just because you can use it" doesn't mean that you should use it. I still hate reuters for using javascript for links to subsequent pages of articles. A simple would do the trick. ------------------------------ Date: 3 Apr 2007 17:48:51 -0700 From: "David B Sneddon" Subject: Re: More on why Javascript is evil Message-ID: <1175647731.602897.223630@y80g2000hsf.googlegroups.com> On Apr 3, 6:22 pm, Alan Frisbie wrote: > Mark Daniel wrote: > > +-------------------------------------------------------+ > > | Site so.and.so is requesting JavaScript execution. | > > | Allow JavaScript for this site? | > > | [o]never [o]this time [o]always [OK] [Cancel] [Help] | > > +-------------------------------------------------------+ > > I would *LOVE* to have this feature in Firefox! But as someone not familiar with Phoenix, I found it interesting anyway. Their Web site doesn't say what kind of battery technology they're using, but the only one I'm familiar with that could even begin to support 10-minute recharging to 95% capacity is NiMH (unless Li-polymer can as well; NiCd may too, but my impression is that automotive volumes aren't feasible for either). In any event, that tends to eliminate the last major hurdle to use (having to wait overnight to go more than 100 miles or so). OTOH, none of the battery technologies I'm familiar with would support the ~2500 recharge cycles required to make the pack last ~250K miles, as advertised: any insight into such issues (you could email me if continuing the discussion here would be too distressing for you - though my guess is that I'm not the only one here who might be interested)? - bill ------------------------------ Date: 03 Apr 2007 18:36:31 GMT From: Doc Subject: OT: Re: CMMi Level 5 Company Relevant Experience: 2+ to 5 years Message-ID: "jai" wrote in news:1175598914.022739.152100 @l77g2000hsb.googlegroups.com: Your posting here is inappropriate and will not garner you any candidates. Sorry to post two followups, but I think I should highlight that there's two problems here. One is the part that has gone missing, and Redcorp are dealing with this. The second - and one I find objectionable - is the requirement for a copy of both sides of a credit card. Sue, I appreciate you taking this seriously even though I'm using a pseudonym and it's only a low-value part. Howver, when you "deallocate memory" that was, at that time, mapped to the page file, does returning it to the free pool mean that the page file space is released with that address space not mapped to anything until someone next tries to access it ? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2007 18:45:42 GMT From: "FredK" Subject: Re: Should DECW X server release memory ? No. It is still a valid page. You need to delete the virtual address space to "free" the page from the page file (or page it into memory). That is your disconnect. You seem to have this idea that there is a "global" set of pages that get allocated by applications when they malloc something. What happens is that lib$get_vm manages a list of pointers to memory. Initially there is none. Under normal circumstances when someone tries to allocate memory and lib$get_vm doesn't have enough (or any) it expands the processes virtual address space to "create" memory. It does this in a large chunk (and there are zone controls a process can micromanage things with) - and they hands back a pointer to a chunk of that memory. The next time it is called - and assuming there is still memory left - it returns another pointer. When memory is free'd however, what happens is that the address is put on a "list" of available chunks of memory. To actually "release" the memory - the VA needs to be deleted. Which would entail noticing on a free() that an entire page (8kb on Alpha) was not being used by the application - and then deleting the VA. It would THEN need to manage a list of VA addresses that can be created and which do not exist. You are then betting that enough page aligned chunks of 8kb will be allocated at some point to make this all worth the overhead of managing a messy VA management scheme on top of the pool management. Disks are cheap. Create another large page file! Heck, buy a disk JUST for the page file. ------------------------------ Date: 3 Apr 2007 20:08:28 +0200 From: peter@langstoeger.at (Peter 'EPLAN' LANGSTOeGER) Subject: Re: Switching off MULTITHREAD Message-ID: <4612b43c$1@news.langstoeger.at> In article <1175585146.676348.75260@e65g2000hsc.googlegroups.com>, "Ger_Marsh" writes: >Do you think the problems with V5.1 occurred because MQ went multi- >threaded at that point? Excellent idea, Sue. Sometimes he'd just tell me "Be seeing you, Citzen", since we both really liked "The Prisoner" BBC show. I helped him get a machine at home UUCP-connected (around 1992) and it was called fallout.lonestar.org, "Fallout" being the final episode of that series.
