They are a very good thing to have however; those power supplies have been known to fail and it's nice to be able to swap out the bad supply without having your management know there was a problem (unless you choose to tell them). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 15:58:59 -0400 From: "Carl Friedberg" Subject: Re: ba356 box Message-ID: <890539d90709261258q34fd986dofa733c6a2786b34@mail.gmail.com> Richard, You are quite correct, the flaw was in my message. I did not mean to imply that there was a requirement for dual power supplies, in order to split the bus. To split the bus, you need the BA356 manual, which IIRC shows how to flip over a couple of connectors on the BA356 backplane; then I believe the two SCSI connectors on the DWZZI?? will feed each half-bus separately. I know I've done it, but this was more than 10 years ago, so I don't trust my recollection. I've never had a BA356 with only one power supply installed. I have had a BA356 with only one power supply working, and I never noticed that the other supply had died... doh... Carl On 9/26/07, Richard B. I made it a practice to "walk the data center" every work day and just look at things. VMS does not tell you about EVERY hardware problem and I picked up a couple of failed power supplies that way. When I was managing Silicon Graphics workstations back in the late 80s and early 90s, I made "fan rounds" every day. The fans in those boxes were not what you'd call reliable!! I kept a couple of spare fans on hand. . . . ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 23:43:59 GMT From: Rob Brown Subject: Re: despair Message-ID: On Mon, 24 Sep 2007, Bob Koehler wrote: > Most of my friends were carrying around > > "Waterloo FORTRAN with WATFOR and WATFIV" > > I looked, but can't find the authors. How about FORTRAN IV WITH WATFOR AND WATFIV by Cress / Dirksen / Graham. I found it by searching Amazon.com. It says nothing about the execution of the SYSTEM login procedure. Allowing users to bypass the SYLOGIN at will would be a major security hazard, as many sites use SYLOGIN to enforce supplemental security provisions. - Bob Gezelter, http://www.rlgsc.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 19:59:37 +0200 From: "P. Probably because 1.6 brought the authentication which seems required here. We have a similar problem @work because there is still only 1.5.0 on OpenVMS (and we have to enter authentication infos aka usernames/passwords twice)... -- Peter "EPLAN" LANGSTOEGER Network and OpenVMS system specialist E-mail peter@langstoeger.at A-1030 VIENNA AUSTRIA I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist ------------------------------ End of INFO-VAX 2007.527 ************************
