VMS Smart Mailer This directory tree contains the VMS Smart mailer from the DECUS library. All binaries and sources are present. However, to save space (and because the program is available separately via the library) the files are in two VMS Backup savesets, one containing the sources and the other the binaries. This is a fairly complete mailing list manager system and associated utilities. There is even a VMSINSTAL command file. To decompress, find LZDCM.EXE elsewhere here and define it as a foreign command. Then the command $ LZDCM file.BZK file.BCK will decompress file.BZK into file.BCK, the .BCK file being a VMS BACKUP saveset. Be sure you have room on your disk for a file about 3 times the length of the original .BZK file when you do this. This utility is being presented on these tapes at all due to its general usefulness. You are encouraged to read your DECUS library catalog CAREFULLY. There are a large number of programs there which are as useful as anything on the SIG tapes which you can only get separately. Don't expect everything useful to appear here! The symposium tapes are a great place to start looking for tools, but there is a LOT more in the library for you. Also: as a general tip, look for tools in areas other than your own OS and machine. I have often found programs (in HOLs) that run nicely on a PDP11 in VAX collections, and others that work well on VMS, in native mode, on RSX and other Library offerings. Many of these ran with no changes at all; others needed some TI: to TT: changes or some similar 5 minute hacks. You too can save time and effort; just don't limit what you look at to one machine.
