I'm looking for hints on Windows 3 and PCSA: 1- what is a realistic hardware configuration for running those with a few application: - 386sx with 2 MB ? ... 4 MB ? - Is a 286 usable at all ? with how much memory ? 2- how to optimize PCSA when used with windows on a 386 ? - what modules in what kind of memory ? - is the LIM-EMS simulator (EMM386) usable in 386 enhanced mode ? ( if the driver is loaded with the release-notes-documented parameter D=48, windows will accept to startup in 386 mode with EMS memory, provided PCSA was NOT loaded in EMS !) 3- What about DEC's support of windows 3 ? (in PCSA or in applications) It seems they stopped providing windows bundled with PCSA just before the first valuable version of windows was out. ================================================================================ Note 5.2 Windows 3.0 and PCSA questions 2 of 4 DVSIS::MPFEFFER 15 lines 5-SEP-1990 09:43 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We have and will continue to support MS-Windows. The PCSA major releases and the MS-Windows releases seem to overlap. You can expect support of MS-Windows V3.0 in the future. For now, your 316sx configuration with 2MB would be a minimum MS-Windows/PCSA solution (in my opinion). OF course, I have a 325 with 10MB on my desk so I'm spoiled. My experience with Windows 3.0 is that the 286 mode runs Windows applictions nearly as well as the 386 mode. As far as compatibility with EMM386 mode is concerned, yes I would not load any PCSA components in EMS. Once this is available, you should be able to use QEMM-386 as your expanded memory driver and then load PCSA into expanded memory that way. I believe Qualitas is also working on a new version of 386Max that will be compatible with Windows 3.0. At the current time, neither of these products are compatible with Windows 3.0. I have not seen the problem myself so am not sure of all the details. Should there be any problem with this ? If so, what are the things to check ? If that doesn't help, then you'll have to run Windows 3 in 286 mode (which still uses extended memory). Mike ================================================================================ Note 11.2 PCSA/Windows V3 in 386 enhanced mode 2 of 4 DVSIS::BTUERLINCKX "tell me why I don't like mondays" 7 lines 5-SEP-1990 09:55 -< just a bit more info >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I do agree with the previous comment. However, with a plain vanilla AUTOEXEC and CONFIG, with just my KEYB FR and mouse, I could start PCSA V3 with (I think) redir loaded in HMA, then windows in 386enh mode, and it really seemed to work. But it is essential to use the memory manager provided with windows, and NOT PCSA's HIMEM, or QEMM or CEMM or anything else. ================================================================================ Note 11.3 PCSA/Windows V3 in 386 enhanced mode 3 of 4 DVSIS::MPFEFFER 9 lines 5-SEP-1990 10:32 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Correct...Microsoft is shipping a new version of HIMEM.SYS for special Windows hooks....Also, Windows is not compatible with VCPI therefore QEMM, CEMM and the like will not work. However, new versions of 386MAX and QEMM are on the way and will have Windows 3 support. Mike
