After bashing, a X character may be off balance for several rounds depending upon X his DEXTERITY. X.p X Doors can be broken down by bashing them. Once a door is X bashed open, it is forever useless and cannot be closed. X.p X`20 X Chests too may be bashed open, but be warned that the X careless smashing of a chest often ruins the contents. Bashing X open a chest will not disarm any traps it may contain, but does X allow the strong and ignorant to see what's inside. X.p X`20 X Finally, a creature may be bashed. If a shield is currently X being worn, the bash is a shield bash and will do more damage. X In either case, a bash may throw an opponent off balance for a X number of rounds, allowing a player to get in a free hit or more. X If the player is thrown off-balance, his opponent may get free X hits on him. This is a risky attack. X.p X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X.lt X2 Cursed_Objects X.el X.lm 1 X.p X Some objects, mainly armor and weapons, have had curses laid X upon them. These horrible objects will look like any other X normal item, but will detract from your character's stats or X abilities if worn. They will also be impossible to remove until X a "Remove Curse" spell is used. X.p X`20 X When a cursed item has been identified, an asterisk '*' will X appear next to the inventory letter of the item. If you should X wear a cursed item, you will immediately know it is cursed and X again the asterisk will appear. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X`20 X2 Death X.lm 1 X.p X If your character falls below 0 hit points, he has died and X cannot be restored. A tombstone showing information about your X character will be displayed with the option to print the X information to a file. You will also be asked if you would like X to print his character sheet to a file. X.p X After the tombstone, a list of high scores will appear. The number X listed can be specified in the command line, default is 20. X.p X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X2 Fighting X.lm 1 X.p X Attacking is simple in Moria. If you move into a creature, X you attack him. You can attack from a distance by firing a X missile, or by magical means such as aiming a wand. Creatures X attack in the same way - if they move into you, they attack you. X Some creatures can cast spells from a distance, and dragon-type X creatures can breathe from a distance, but these are the only X exceptions. X.p X If you are wielding a weapon, the damage for the weapon is X used when you hit the creature. If you are wielding no weapons, X you get two fist strikes. A very strong creature (such as a X half-troll) or a monk can do a lot of damage with its fists. A X character may have both a primary and a secondary weapon. The X secondary weapon is kept on the belt, or on the shoulder for X immediate use. You can switch between your primary and secondary X weapons by using the 'x' command. Be sure you are wielding the X proper weapon when fighting. Beating a dragon over the head with X a bow or shovel will simply make him mad, and get you killed. X.p X Missile weapons (such as bows) can be wielded, and then the X proper missile (in this case an arrow) can be fired across the X room into a target. Missiles can be used without the proper X missile weapon, but used together they have a greater range and X do far more damage. X.p X Hits and misses are determined by comparing your class, your X level, and the armor class of the monster. (at a given level of X experience, Fighters hit the most often, and Mages hit the least X often). A miss doesn't necessarily mean that you didn't hit the X monster, but that you failed to do any damage (perhaps due to the X monster's armor). A 'hit' is any attempted swing that succeeds X in doing damage. Higher armor classes make it harder to inflict X damage, therefore you will miss more often when attacking X creatures with higher armor classes. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X2 Light X.lm 1 X.p X There are two sources for light once you enter the dungeon. X Permanent light which has been magically placed within rooms, and X light sources carried by the player. If neither is present, the X character will be unable to map or see any attackers. Lack of X light will also affect searching, picking locks, and disarming. X.p X A character must wield a torch or lamp in order to supply X his own light. Once a torch or lamp has 50 or less turns (moves) X left before burning out, you will be reminded that your source of X light is about to run out. This message will continue to be X displayed at random intervals. Once a torch is burnt out, it is X useless and can be dropped. A lamp or lantern can be refilled X with oil by using the Fill ('F') command. You must, of course, X be carrying extra oil to do this. There are also rumors of magic X lanterns that run on magical charges instead of oil, but these X would be rare if you could find them at all. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X2 Creatures X.lm 1 .p X There are hundreds of horrible creatures in the depths of X Moria and as you get deeper the weaker ones are replaced by more X vicious foes. There are several categories of monsters, although X some creatures belong in more than one of these. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X3 Dragons X.lm 1 .p X These magical reptiles live far down in the lower layers of X the dungeon. There are several species, each of which have a X different shade of scales. As they get older they may learn magic X with which to defend themselves, or just get an easy meal. It is X rumored that some of the dragons are born with bizzare changes X that are due to the magical nature of dragons, such as multiple X heads or a highly magical breed. One thing is for certain X and that is that the best weapon to fight them with is a Slay X Dragon weapon; one that was specially forged to be the death of X these beasts. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X3 Undead X.lm 1 .p X Once living beings, these souls have become everliving. But X in exchange for this "gift" most of them need to drain the life X from the still living. Beware the touch of a Lich! Some of the X more powerful undead were once mages or evil priests and still X know their powerful spells. The best weapon with which to attack X these foul beings with is a specially blessed to be a Slay Undead X weapon. If you have lost some of your life essence to an undead X you must obtain a restore life levels potion to regain it. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X3 Demons X.lm 1 .p X These abominations of demonic might are quite powerful. X Most of them have magical abilities and they can appear in just X about any form of animal or creature. At the lowest levels reside X the Demon Lords which can summon any of their minions and the X Demon, the Balrog, is the ruler of Moria and object of the quest X that you have undertaken. Opposed to these creatures are the X various Demon Bane weapons. With one of these you may do much X more damage when striking. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X3 Evil X.lm 1 .p X Most of the intelligent creatures in the dungeon are evil. X Of course the Undead and the Demons are evil by nature, as well X most Dragons, but many of the humanoids and monsters are also of X an evil nature. Even some of the townspeople are evil! The Slay X Evil weapons and the Holy Avenger were made to defeat these foes, X but due to the many variations of evil are not as effective as, X say, a Slay Dragon, which is specially attuned. Priest characters X have many prayers with which to combat Evil monsters because of X their religeous vow to destroy evil. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X`20 X3 Monsters X.lm 1 .p X Many of the beasts in Moria are only able to survive in the X dungeon due to their unnatural nature. These creatures are called X Monsters and are the foes of the Druid class. Just about anything X that is not an animal or person is a monster. To fight these foes X you should get a Slay Monster weapon, but like Slay Evil, these X weapons are not as attuned to the wide variety of creatures. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X3 Regenerative X.lm 1 .p X Some of the monsters, like Trolls and many of the Demons, X heal rather rapidly. If you teleport away because the monster is X too dangerous, you will find that most of the damage you did has X healed by the time you meet him again. A Slay Regenerative weapon X will do extra damage to these creatures every time that you hit. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X3 Mimics X.lm 1 .p X On occation an object that looks like treasure may actually X be a creature that mimics that shape to fool you into approaching. X Most can be identified by approaching cautiously, but be careful. X.lm 0 X.blank 2 X2 Mining X.lm 1 .p X Much of the treasure within the dungeon can be found only by X mining it out of the walls. Many rich strikes exist within each X level, but they must be found and mined. Quartz veins are the X richest, yielding the most metals and gems, but magma veins will X also have some hordes hidden within. X.p X Mining is very difficult without a pick or shovel (although X a strength of 18 or higher sometimes eliminates the need for a X digging tool). Like many other items, picks and shovels may have X an additional magical ability expressed as '(+#)'. The higher X this number, the more quickly the tool will enable you to remove X obstructing quartz, magma, or granite. A pick or shovel also has X plusses to hit and damage, and can be used as a weapon, but most X other weapons do a significantly larger amount of damage, so it X is always important to be sure that you are *NOT* wielding your X pick/shovel when you are in combat with a monster! Many people X lose their characters because they don't realize that they are X still wielding their pick - not their broadsword. X.p X When a vein of quartz or magma is located, the character X should wield his pick or shovel and begin digging out a section. X When that section is removed, he should locate another section of +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- END OF PART 57 +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
