What is NETPBM? Bill Davidsen (davidsen@tmr.com) NETPBM is a revised version of the PBMplus package, containing corrections and enhancements to the 10dec91 version of PBMplus. It is not "official" in the sense of being released by the original author, but the idea of a net supported version has been approved by him. NETPBM is a collection of tools which do the following: 1. Import - read images in popular formats and convert to one of the internal PBM formats. 2. Image processing - manipulate the image data to produce many effects including scaling, contrast and gamma adjustment, edge detection, etc. 3. Export - write images in popular formats for use with other software. Will it run on my computer? If your computer is anything like a UNIX(tm) system, almost certainly. If it is anything with a C compiler and redirectable output, probably (MS-DOS and Amiga, for instance). If it doesn't support lots of real or virtual address space, probably not. Is it easy to use? Most people find it very easy to use, and have no problem with the idea of reading the image in, working on it, and writing it out. However, some people really need a user interface with graphics, menus, buttons, etc. Feel free to write one, NETPBM source is available. Where do I get it? The official list of sites is posted in alt.graphics.pixutils on a regular basis. In the USA one site for ftp access is ftp.rahul.net in the /pub/davidsen/sources directory. Telephone download is available from the *IX BBS (home of MBS) at +1 518-346-8033. NETPBM source is also available on 3-1/2 inch floppy in tar format, or compiled and ready to load for popular UNIX systems. Item US price elsewhere NETPBM source $5 $15 NETPBM compiled* $5 $15 both $10 $20 *Specify Intel SysV, Xenix/386, IBM RS6000, Sun4. New York residents please add local sales tax, please pay by check or money order in US funds on a US bank. All software may be freely redistributed. -- Bill Davidsen, davidsen@tmr.com | C programming, PC based UNIX, data TMR Associates, +1 518-370-5654 | acquisition, device drivers.
