UPDATES TO PACKAGES ------------------- There are times when I add updates to packages. These updates are contained in separate `.tar-gz' files and are named according to the name of the original package, with the date replaced with `UPDATES-' followed by the date of the update in question. For example, if the is an EMACS-19_28-19950918.TAR-GZ, the updates are named something like EMACS-19_58-UPDATES-19950919.TAR-GZ. If there is an update dated the same day as the package, you do not need it. It's an update for an earlier revision of the package. For example, if these are the files available: EMACS-19_28-19950627.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19950629.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19950704.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19950706.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19950909.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19950917.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-19950918.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19950918.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19950919.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19951120.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19951121.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-19960225.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19960225.TAR-GZ if you want the latest available revision of Emacs, you only need whatever you're missing among the following files: EMACS-19_28-19950918.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19950919.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19951120.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19951121.TAR-GZ EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19960225.TAR-GZ You don't need EMACS-19_28-UPDATES-19950918.TAR-GZ at all. That one is an update to get to the same level as the package EMACS-19_28-19950918.TAR-GZ from the earlier revisions. When you have fetched the files, you have to unpack them in date order. If you don't, older files may overwrite newer ones, and you'll get an unstable Emacs as result. Unpack them in the same directory, then purge (unless you want to check the changes), configure, compile, link, install and run. /Richard Levitte, GNU on VMS hacker. levitte@lp.se
